Let me write up a quick synopsis for you: John Scalzi is an unrepentant four-hankie sentimentalist, but at least he’s funny when he’s doing it. I haven’t seen Galaxy Quest, and have no idea what the manic mice are squeaking about. I was going to write a review for this one, but then I realized I could basically just cut and paste my review of Agent to the Stars , changing relevant details like “plot” and “character names” and just keeping everything else exactly the same. I hope you enjoy the whole thing.

Oddly though, I loved the 3 codas at the end.

If you’ve ever seen a single episode of Star Trek or at least know the general fan culture, you’ll find that this book will bite at the ideas that make up that show and shows john scalzi redshirts that in general.

I knew since some time ago about this novel but until now I had been able to read it, and I am truly glad zcalzi I did it! As it opens playing on john scalzi redshirts cliches of science fiction TV specifically Star Trek it is funny.

I mean, I suppose I could have done, and I flatter myself with being talented enough as a writer to make it work. You get about scaalzi third of the way through the book and the book’s outlook, direction and premise change.

His previous novel was Fuzzy Nation. I write huge tangled metafictional fantasy thingers.

Anyway, here I was, yawning and mourning the loss of the awesome space stuff, when all of a sudden the story itself went POOF.

That might be because EVERY away mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; 3. Overall, this was a funny story that didn’t make much sense, but I’m okay with that.
